It’s a play on words, of course. Pittsburgh + fitness = Fittsburgh.
But, we’re not just talking about fitness for athletes or elite exercisers. We’re Pittsburgh’s guide to healthy living and we’re on a mission to make Pittsburgh a healthier place to live, for everyone.
It’s a great time to be a Pittsburgher
If you’re from Pittsburgh. If you grew up here. If you’ve lived here for any amount of time, you already know that this city is unlike all the rest. There’s just something about this place.
Here in town, we’ve known it all along. We were never shy about telling others either. The Steelers and Super Bowl Rings. Primanti Brothers. The Strip. Kennywood. The incline and rivers and bridges. Pittsburgh has always loved Pittsburgh.
But now, everyone else is starting to take notice. They’re catching on. It seems as though the secret is out. This diamond in the rough has become a coveted jewel. Interestingly enough, it has little to do with steel, sports or sandwiches.
And the award goes to…
…Pittsburgh! Most livable and affordable. Must visit. Smartest.
Aww. We’re blushing over here. But, the praise keeps coming. Bon Appetit named Pittsburgh the next Big Food City. Then there was Andrew Zimmern, of Bizarre Foods on Travel Channel, who said, “I get around more than most people and I'm telling you, Pittsburgh is like the next big thing.”
Walk around Downtown or Lawrenceville or North Shore and you’ll come away with a sense that there’s a shift taking place. There’s a vibe around town that we’re headed in the right direction. We are, in fact, on the path towards becoming that next big thing.
What more could you ask for?
Well, since you brought it up, there is one thing that comes to mind. We are out of shape.
Pittsburgh as a whole I mean. Our population has higher than average rates of obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Unfortunately, this is not one of those lists we want to be on top of.
Yes, as you’ve read, we think Pittsburgh is the place to be. It’s up and coming. The next big thing. But, we want to make sure that description does not become literal. We want to be huge and healthy. Not just huge.
We can’t overlook our health on the way to the top. In fact, we’ll never make it to the top if health doesn’t become a priority. Which is exactly what Fittsburgh aims to do, make healthy a part of what it means to be from, or live in Pittsburgh.
We’re on a mission
We are encouraging and empowering every Pittsburgher to move more and eat well. By profiling the people and places making Pittsburgh a healthier place to live, we’re making the healthy choice an easy one. It’s not about dishing out an exercise program or diet either. We’re connecting the dots between food, fun and fitness to help you create your own definition of health.
This website isn’t about us, it’s about you and our community. It’s about the amazing people who are out there trying to make this city healthier. Whether it’s a gym owner or an organic farmer, a specialty grocer or a local shoe store, the choice to go healthy is all around us. We’re simply making them mainstream.Keep up with online, via the digital magazine. Sign up for our email list to be the first to know about our pop-up workouts and wellness fairs.
